Girls always bitch about this, sure, but it’s not like it’s any better for guys. You think I wanna be some ultra macho beefcake?
There’s a reason I always pick female character models in video games.
I fucking lost my shit over this
I’ve just realized that I’ve been in love with Warcraft characters over 11 years.. Damn I’m old
GUYS I’VE HAD A WONDERFUL IDEA FOR THE NEXT WOW EXPANSION.
WE GET THIS GUY BACK
AND WE HAVE HIM VOICED BY THIS GUY
yes i’m a boy
yes i play videogames ;]
don’t hit on me silly girls xoxoxo
wft boys don’t play videogames
get back in the garage and fix my car.
another fucking “gamer boy” They all just want attention they cant even play well!
He’s just a slut with a controller.
That console isn’t even plugged in you fucking whore.
I bet that’s his girlfriend’s system.
more you tilt your body your character will get away from danger
the louder you yell, the more critical hits you’ll land
when you stand up you can see everyone’s weakspots
when you tilt your head you’ll be able to see more of the area
When you lean forward, you get +30% concentration.
When you use controller 1, it means you’ll win
Throwing yourself bodily to the side helps you avoid obstacles in racing.
Threatening the playable character with physical injury will make platform puzzles easier.
All of these things. All of them.
This entire post sums up my belief system from the time I was five years old to now.
I love the way call of duty looks no different.
Far be it for me to defend Call of Duty, but it IS the shortest time gap of around ten years, in which the industry as a whole has barely moved in graphical themes. Just look at the fact that almost every game in this list has moved in the same direction, towards realism, with only a few keeping themselves stylised. A little critical analysis of the provided information does somewhat excuse that…
Call of Duty has also had the least TO change in this time gap. Also the two screens are of very similar scenes and I know for a fact that there are more varied locales that the series explores in the more recent titles, though perhaps not frequently enough…
To say it looks no different is a huge disservice to the teams of artists who do create every single thing in these games, from the divots visible on the catch of the weapon in the forefront to the fact that the game is happily handling at least 5 humanoid figures in full motion with several thousand particles being affected based on a realistic physics model with a baked lightmap and dynamic shadows applying atop that usually running at 60 frames per second on machines that are almost 8 years old… There’s some amazing technical artistic prowess going on there, let alone the artistic eye for detail required to produce high quality, high definition game assets that don’t cause the game stress by being re-rendered 60 times a second and still look almost real. I mean it’s no WindWaker HD I will give you that but to say that its not changed is quite mean to the team members on the franchise even if their leads are being forced down the same formulaic idea time and time again.
(But then that’s probably part of the reason for the large loss of big and smaller names that Infinity Ward had after the West/Zampella vs Activision case, other than the feeling of betrayal some of them likely also felt. Not to mention that some of them weren’t getting the bonuses they’d earned from their parent company but stagnation effects devs as much as consumers and I long for the day that this fact actually affects publishers…)
Regardless there’s still people who derive more enjoyment from the top halves of these images than the bottom due to the gameplay being more stagnant than the graphics have been in some series. This is where I’d actually criticize CoD further, despite it’s rather brown, era defining ‘art direction’ and perhaps Pokemon to some extent despite that being a franchise which I have owned at least two of each generation from Red to Black 2 and several spin-offs which toy with the gameplay somewhat, leaving the core practically untouched except for minor enhancements and updates… The key difference being that Pokemon’s had spin offs while CoD hasn’t. The biggest tweak for both franchises has been in the game feel department, innovation in making the player feel rewarded for their progress, guided properly and telling a more complex story each time, even if it’s not this practically mythical idea of “The Citizen Kane of Games”.
The skin over these games is constantly changing and evolving. In a few too many cases the gameplay isn’t. I know it’s hard to show that in a picture to picture comparison and that’s not even the point of this list in the first place, it’s here solely to consider the graphical achievements that every game here has made in the past 20-30 years of the industry. But y’know, don’t belittle the efforts of the people making these games when they don’t deserve it… There’s some serious technical achievement in Call of Duty, even if they WILL insist that it was super hard for them to implement women into their game engine for Ghosts after the same length of time that’s between those two images. (Bullshit. It just didn’t MATTER to them.) Let’s criticize it and it’s team where it deserves it.
Also I’m pretty sure that shot of Madden is from EA’s pre-rendered conceptualization of what their new engine will look like on next gen consoles rather than actual footage at this point… So also somewhat unfair…
Also Civ V came out in 2010 just after I started my Games Design course so… Y’know, honestly that’s even more impressive and Pokemon Red and GREEN came out in Japan in 1996, with the slightly updated Red and Blue releasing in 98 elsewhere, 99 in Europe. These little inaccuracies alone annoy me more than Call of Duty’s art style stagnation ‘cause they’re solved by Google…
I wish read-more tags worked on image posts…
